Respiratory Question for the Week of February 19, 2024

Question:

Does BiPAP have a separate code in the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®)?

BiPAP is a noninvasive method of ventilatory support. It includes continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and pressure support ventilation. BiPAP does not have a separate code in CPT®, because it is a component of CPAP. The AMA instructs providers to use the CPAP code for BiPAP. It is not appropriate to bill for BiPAP using CPT codes 94002-94003 for invasive ventilation.
