Respiratory Question for the Week of March 11, 2024

What are the key differences between code 94617 and the newly added code 94619, which describes exercise testing without electrocardiographic (ECG) recording, and how do these differences affect the coding and billing practices for exercise testing procedures?

In 2018, code 94620 was deleted and replaced with two new codes—94617 and 94618—to distinguish the six-minute walk and pre- and post-exercise spirometry components of this service. Additionally, existing code 94621 was revised to reflect cardiopulmonary exercise testing, encompassing integrated measurements and assessment of cardiac and pulmonary function as well as the status of the patient’s physical fitness. In 2021, code 94617 was revised slightly to pave the way for the newly added CPT® code 94619, which describes exercise testing without electrocardiographic (ECG) recording.
