Question:

When managing a patient with acute airway obstruction, what modification to oxygen therapy can be made to improve oxygen saturation, and how is this service billed?

Answer:

In the case of an acute airway obstruction, it may be necessary to modify the oxygen therapy by administering a mixture of helium and oxygen in order to provide adequate oxygen saturation. Heli-ox may be billed as a non-routine supply with revenue code 0271.
