Is there a CPT® for the delivery of oxygen in the operating room?
Delivery of oxygen in the operating room and recovery room is routine to the procedure and is inherent in the reimbursement of the “surgical package.” There is no CPT® code for oxygen. Bill it with revenue code 0271, designating it as a supply. It must be billed in “measurable” units that can be monitored, such as per liter, per hour, per quarter hour, and per minute, and discontinued as soon as it is no longer medically necessary. Daily and “per shift” oxygen charges are not appropriate.
