Respiratory Question for the Week of September 24, 2018

Question:

If multiple spirometric determinations are necessary to complete a service, how many units can be reported?

Answer:

According to the National Correct Coding Initiative Manual for Medicare Services (chapter XI, section J.3.), only one unit of service shall be reported.  For example, CPT® code 94070 describes bronchospasm provocation with an administered agent and utilizes multiple spirometric determinations as in CPT code 94010.  A single unit of service includes all the necessary spirometric determinations.
