Respiratory Question for the Week of January 15, 2018

Question:

What code should be reported when an exercise test is done to diagnose bronchospasm?

Answer:

The following new code should be reported for testing to diagnose exercise-induced bronchospasm:

94617 Exercise test for bronchospasm, including pre- and post-spirometry, electrocardiographic recording(s), and pulse oximetry

This includes a baseline spirogram, with repeat spirograms obtained following the exercise session in which the patient walks on a treadmill. An alternate method of exercise may be employed such as a stationary bicycle. The data is gathered and a written interpretation is prepared by the physician.
