Question:

An adult patient with a double aortic arch had a heart catheterization/coronary angiogram performed. Should this be reported with the congenital or noncongenital CPT® codes?

Answer:

We recommend using the non-congenital heart catheterization codes in this scenario. The CPT® book states, “Anomalous coronary arteries, patent foramen ovale, mitral valve prolapse, and bicuspid aortic valve are to be reported with 93451–93464, 93566–93568.” If anomalous coronary arteries are not reported with the congenital codes, we don’t think that an anomalous arch would be either.
