Radiology Question for the Week of April 29, 2019

Question:

What is the correct code for evaluating residual bladder volume via ultrasound? I have assigned code 76857 (ultrasound, limited pelvis).

Answer:

A bladder-only study (with or without post-void residual) is coded as 76857 when imaging is performed. If post-void residual measurement is calculated without imaging, code 51798 is assigned (measurement of post-voiding residual urine and/or bladder capacity by ultrasound, non-imaging).

76857 Ultrasound, pelvic (nonobstetric), real time with image documentation; limited or follow-up (e.g., for follicles)
