Question:

What are the new category III codes describing mitral valve and tricuspid valve annulus reconstruction?

Answer:

Although there were no Category I (i.e., CPT) codes added in 2020 affecting diagnostic or therapeutic cardiac catheterization services, there were two Category III codes added for 2020 that could impact services. In 2020, CPT® added the following two Category III code options describing mitral valve and tricuspid valve annulus reconstruction. Many typical cardiac catheterization codes are not able to be assigned with either of these codes if the cardiac cath procedures are performed for a non-diagnostic reason; i.e., performed solely to aid in the valve repair itself. The codes and full descriptions are as follows:

0544T Transcatheter mitral valve annulus reconstruction, with implantation of adjustable annulus reconstruction device, percutaneous approach including transseptal puncture
0545T Transcatheter tricuspid valve annulus reconstruction, with implantation of adjustable annulus reconstruction device, percutaneous approach.
