Cardiology Question for the Week of September 27, 2021

Question:

How do we bill echocardiogram with intravenous Lumason® contrast in the office?

Answer:

You would report the regular echo code appropriate to what you did such as 93306 for a complete echo with color and spectral Doppler. Then you would report the HCPCS code for the contrast – Q9950 for Lumason. This is billed per ml given on one line and Q9950 -JW times the amount discarded from the 5 ml vial on a second line. The doctor should document in the patient’s record the amount discarded.
