Cardiology Question for the Week of April 17, 2017

Question:

We explanted the dual-system permanent pacemaker and then we implanted two new leads and attached them to the existing pacemaker on the other side of the chest. I can’t find one CPT code that captures what we did. Can you offer me insight into how you would code this?

Answer:

There isn’t one code that covers this procedure.  As with many of the pacemaker/ICD procedures, it takes multiple codes to cover what was done.  In this case, you would report the following:

33222 Relocation of skin pocket for pacemaker
33235 Removal of transvenous pacemaker electrode(s); dual lead system
33217 Insertion of 2 transvenous electrodes, permanent pacemaker or implantable defibrillator
