Laboratory Question for the Week of August 22, 2022

Question:

When it comes to reporting cytogenetic studies, is it ok to bill the 8XX99 codes for unlisted procedures?

Answer:

Avoid using the 8XX99 codes for unlisted procedures. Refer to Methodology or Category III before selecting an unlisted code. Although many labs use them as a “miscellaneous lab” code, Medicare as a general rule does not reimburse unlisted codes without a special report. Unlisted codes should be used sparingly.
