Laboratory Question for the Week of August 29, 2022

Question:

What differences are important to know between code 88305 and 88307 for reporting?

Answer:

Note the distinction in the coding of breast tissue when it is necessary to evaluate margins. Code 88305 represents the breast biopsy not requiring evaluation of surgical margins, while 88307 represents the excision of a lesion requiring microscopic evaluation of surgical margins. According to the July 2000 AMA CPT Assistant Coding Update, “the definitive evaluation of the breast biopsy is coded using either 88305 or 88307, depending on whether or not the surgical margins of the specimen requires microscopic evaluation.”
