Laboratory Question for the Week of February 26, 2024

Question:

Why was code 87523 established and is it new for 2024?

Answer:

Code 87523 was established to confirm and quantify the presence of the hepatitis D (hep D) virus for therapeutic purposes and to monitor disease progression. Initially established in 2022 for infectious agent detection of the Orthopoxvirus due to the outbreak of monkeypox in the United States, CPT® code 87593 is now first appearing in the CPT manual for 2024.
