Question:
What are the specific procedural codes associated with leukapheresis or lymphocytapheresis?
Answer:
Leukapheresis or lymphocytapheresis are terms that also describe white blood cell (WBC) apheresis (36511) procedures in which the WBCs are isolated and retained. Note that separate codes are available to represent red blood cell (RBC) and platelet apheresis. Report 36522 when therapeutic wavelengths of light are used to remove elements from the patient’s blood. CPT® code 36516 describes a very specific modality that uses adsorption of selective filtration.
