Laboratory Question for the Week of October 25, 2021

Question:

When a single case requires the processing of multiple specimens that and we code for 88362 and 88380 on the same date of service what will documentation require? Is a modifier needed?

Answer:

When a single case requires the processing of multiple specimens that will constitute the billing of 88362 and 88380 on the same date of service, documentation must reflect the examination of separate and distinct specimens. When documentation supports reporting of both procedures, a modifier may be appended to 88380.
