Question:

What different types of classifications determine the medical necessity for reflex testing?

Answer:

Reflex testing, confirmatory testing, and group tests are compliance issues associated with immunology. According to the NCCI policies, there are two different classifications of reflex testing that determine the medical necessity for performance and billing of an add-on test:

  • Positive test results that may have clinical value without additional testing; and
  • Positive test results that require additional testing in order to have a clinical value.
