Question:
I’ve heard the government wants submission of COVID-19 lab data via electronic health records, do you have any tips for reporting this?
Answer:
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has some recommendations on how this lab data can be captured in EHR. These are suggestions but not requirements in terms of transmitting lab results back to the ordering provider. Specifics for inclusion are:
- Test result – use appropriate LOINC and SNOMED codes, as defined by the Laboratory In Vitro Diagnostics (LIVD) Test Code Mapping for SARS-CoV-2 Tests provided by CDC
- Test result date (date format)
- Unique patient identifier
- Test ordered—use appropriate LOINC codes
- Device Identifier
- Accession #/Specimen ID
