Question:

When performing chemistry testing, if a specific analyte is not listed in the lab section of the CPT® book, where should we be looking?

Answer:

If a specific analyte is not listed in the laboratory section of the CPT® book, look to the section for Category III codes. If that search is unsuccessful, next look to a methodology code. If neither the analyte nor the method is in the CPT book, use the unlisted procedure code 84999. Be aware that this code requires a special report for accurate billing.
