What codes should be reported for testing blood platelets?

Answer:

Between January 1 and June 30, 2017, you would report the following code:

P9072 Platelets, pheresis, pathogen reduced or rapid bacterial tested, each unit

However, effective July 1, 2017 and after, the two new HCPCS codes below should be assigned:

Q9987 Pathogen(s) test for platelets
Q9988 Platelets, pathogen reduced, each unit
