Respiratory Question for the Week of June 26, 2017

Question:

To report the PSG codes, is there a certain number of hours that sleep must be recorded?

Answer:

In order to report the CPT codes for polysomnography (95808–95811, 95782–95783), sleep must be recorded and staged for a period of greater than six hours. In cases of reduced service where less than six hours of recording occurs, or if less than four nap opportunities are recorded, the service should be reported with the 52 modifier. Supporting documentation should include the interpretation of test results, which should provide a definitive diagnosis and provide an outline of the suggested therapeutic intervention.
