Pharmacy Question for the Week of January 30, 2017

Question:

I am trying to find information about the change in Medicare prices for drugs from 2016 to 2017. Can you provide this information?

Answer:

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) compared first quarter 2017 payment amounts to the last quarter of 2016 and found that, on average, prices for Part B drugs decreased by 0.4 percent. For 2017, only one of the top 50 drugs remained the same. Otherwise, payments for 20 of the top 50 drugs decreased and 29 of the top 50 of the higher volume drugs the prices increased by 2 percent or less.
