Radiology Question for the Week of November 9, 2020

Question:

If a film is obtained to verify the position of the clip placed during a needle localization procedure, can we bill this with the unilateral mammogram code 77065?

Answer:

Per NCCI 2020, if the breast biopsy and/or localization wire/clip placement was performed under mammographic guidance, a follow-up mammogram may not be coded. The radiologic guidance codes include all imaging by the defined modality required to perform the procedure. However, if the surgical procedure was performed using a different guidance modality (e.g., stereotactic, ultrasound, or MRI), the follow-up mammogram may be separately reported.
