Respiratory Question for the Week of September 4, 2023

Question:

What codes should be used to report face-to-face smoking and tobacco use cessation counseling for symptomatic and asymptomatic patients? Would G0436 and G0437 still cover these services?

Answer:

On October 1, 2016, HCPCS codes G0436 and G0437 were deleted and replaced with existing CPT codes 99406 and 99407. With the deletion of the Gcodes, 99406 and 99407 are now paid as preventive services. Report 99406 for sessions lasting between 3 and 10 minutes, and 99407 for counseling sessions lasting more than 10 minutes. The codes do not represent billable increments of time and are not reported as “add-on” codes; report only one code per encounter. Reimbursement for 99406 and 99407 under OPPS in 2023 has increased slightly from $26.84 to $29.68 per encounter (APC 5821).
